A ridge walk in the heat
The plan was simple: up the forest road, along the ridge, and down past the spring at the old hut. The spring was dry. It had rained the week before, so I did not check.
I started at nine, which was two hours too late. By noon the ridge had no shade at all and I was rationing the last litre. The descent through the pines felt like walking into a cellar.
Next time
- Start at first light in July, or pick a route with water in the valley.
- Carry three litres when the only source on the map is a spring nobody has reported recently.
- A wide-brimmed hat beats a cap on an open ridge.
It was still a good day. The view from the last summit was worth every warm sip.
