Short days: walking with a headlamp

· 1 min read · autumn, safety

The first weekend after the clocks change always catches me out. A route that fits easily into a September afternoon ends in the dark in November.

Walking by headlamp is fine on a trail you know and slow on one you do not. Junctions are the problem: signs that are obvious in daylight disappear outside the beam. I now mark the last two junctions on the map before setting off.

Two rules I keep: the headlamp lives in the hip-belt pocket, not at the bottom of the pack, and the turnaround time is set by sunset, not by how far I have come.
